House Approves ANWR Advertising Contract Bill (HB 358)


HB 358 would help get message to Americans that Alaskans want Reserve open

Monday, April 9, 2012, Juneau, Alaska – The Alaska House tonight approved creating an advertising campaign to promote the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR, Coastal Plain to oil and gas exploration and development.

House Bill 358, sponsored by Rep. Lance Pruitt, directs the Dept. of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development to contract with a qualified trade association to conduct an ad campaign through 2015 in an effort to open the coastal plain of ANWR. The bill calls for a 50-50 match once approved by the department.

“We match funding for tourism marketing and fisheries marketing, because we recognize their value. Alaskans have said they want the value from ANWR 10-02 area oil for decades, so it’s time the state made the same effort there,” Pruitt, R-Anchorage, said. “ANWR oil can help prolong the life of the Trans Alaska Pipeline, add to the U.S. strategic supply and help us keep family-sustaining jobs for Alaskans. The National Conference of State Legislatures made advocating the opening of ANWR a priority this year, and the U.S. House passed an ANWR provision. It’s time to keep that momentum building.”

The campaign couldn’t be used to advocate for or against a candidate, elected official or group. Any and all materials produced for the campaign would be owned jointly by the state and the qualified trade association.

HB 358 now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
