MAT-SU—The US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) will have a staff person available at the Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s one-stop permit center through the summer. The Corps presence in the Mat-Su every Thursday from 8 am to 2 pm gives an opportunity to work locally with the federal agency from May 15th thru September 15th. The Corps closed their Mat-Su office nearly two years ago.
Mat-Su Borough Development Services Manager Alex Strawn said this makes it easier for anyone developing in wetlands or pursuing questions on regulations.
The Corps will be available at the permit center for general questions from 8-10 am, and they will schedule appointments from 10-2pm. To make appointments with Corps staff, please call (907)753-2619 or email applications to email@example.com"> firstname.lastname@example.org.
Streamlining processes in the Mat-Su Borough began two years ago. The efficiencies have saved more than $300,000 in labor costs and provided the public with a one-stop shop. The Mat-Su Borough permitting staff is cross-trained to handle multiple permit types, such as driveway and utility permits. Staff are also certified floodplain managers. The addition of the Corps and hopefully, in the future some state agencies at the counter, will add more depth to the level of service delivered. “Our long-term vision is a regional permit center where all permits—state, federal, local—are available in one location,” Strawn said.
The permit center is upstairs in the Dorothy Swanda Jones Building at 350 E. Dahlia Ave, Palmer.
