Alyeska Resort’s Spring Carnival kicks off with new venue layout and more activities all weekend

March 29, 2012 (Girdwood, Alaska) – There is much to celebrate this winter and the 35th annual Spring Carnival weekend is the perfect time to gather Southcentral Alaskans at Alyeska Resort. This year’s Spring Carnival will span Friday, April 20 to Sunday, April 22.

With festivities kicking off Friday evening, the Sitzmark Bar & Grill will be hosting the second annual KWHL Costume Party. KWHL’s morning deejays, Bob & Mark, will emcee the party from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The costume party is 21 and over, and admission is free.

The costume party serves a very important purpose beyond pure entertainment. At the event, half of the 50 Taco Bell Slush Cup participant slots will be awarded based on quality of costume. Three judges will score costumes based originality, flare and style. Those with winning costumes will have the opportunity to prepay the $50 registration fee and rest in peace knowing that their Slush Cup spot is guaranteed. The remaining 25 openings will be designated on Saturday at the pond skim venue. Registration for the remaining spots starts at 10:00 A.M.

It has become a tradition for local band, The Photonz, to play the Sitzmark over Spring Carnival weekend. They take the stage at 9:00 P.M. on Friday, April 20 following the KWHL costume party and again on Saturday, April 21. The show is 21 and over show and tickets cost $10 each night.

The main event takes place on Saturday between 2:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. with Anchorage’s favorite morning show deejays, Bob & Mark from KWHL Alaska’s Rock 106.5 FM. To get the best seat in the venue, the resort recommends spectators arrive early and claim a front-row spot. The Sitzmark will be open and serving its favorite pub items and pouring cold beverages starting at 11:00 A.M. Weather permitting, the Sitzmark will also feature an outdoor grill and bar during the day. The Taco Bell Slush Cup venue will also feature a variety of food booths and other family-friendly activity booths.

Registration for the remaining pond skim spots will be held at the main event tent located near the base of the Bear Cub Quad. Participants must register by 1:30 P.M. and the selection process will take place at 2:00 P.M. Guests can also register for Sunday’s Dummy Downhill and XTRATUF™ Tug o’War competitions at the same location.

The event starts with the classic Idiots Swim at 3:30pm where brave souls, young and old, voluntarily jump into the glacier cold pond and swim across for the audience’s entertainment. The Taco Bell Slush Cup will officially kick off with live performer Brook Faulk singing the national anthem, courtesy of local music promoters AK Soul.

This year’s venue will be featuring a new design and layout with a surprise bonus and those details are to be revealed the day of the event. Special guest judges include Aces’ Boomer and Girdwood’s Iditarod racer, Nick Petit and Olympic snowboarder, Callan Chythlook-Sifsof. Post competition, awards will be presented on the main stage with special prizes for Best Trick provided by Lithia Dodge of South Anchorage and Best Wipeout by KWHL. This year’s Taco Bell Slush Cup winner will take home a 2012/13 season pass from Alyeska Resort.

The festivities continue on Sunday, April 22 with the Dummy Downhill and XTRATUF™ Tug o’ War competitions. Participation is free and the top prizes are worthy. This year prizes will be provided by GCI, Specialty Truck & Auto of Anchorage, and Army/Navy Stores and include cash, Alaska Airlines miles and Alyeska Resort gift cards. Registration for both events will be available during the Taco Bell Slush Cup on Saturday and starting at 11:00 A.M. at the Sitzmark on Sunday.

The Dummy Downhill is one of the most creative competitions at the resort involving home made works of art designed for optimal flight down a ski run. New this year, all participating dummies will be on display in the Bear Cub Quad chairlift base area. The downhill competition will begin at noon and the best viewing will be from lower Christmas trail.

The Tug o’ War competition will follow immediately and spectators can watch the action from the Sitzmark deck. Teams of five, with a mandatory female participant per team, will compete head-to-head in single elimination rounds. One team will be crowned “XTRATUF” champions and walk away dry and a cash purse. New this year, there will be a juniors division for those under the ages of 18. Per “official” tug o’war rules, all losing teams must all get into the pond.

Spring Carnival is made possible through the generous support of many local businesses including Taco Bell of Anchorage, Coca-Cola of Anchorage, Rockstar Energy Drink, VitaminWater, Absolut Vodka, Odom Southern Wine & Spirits, Lithia Dodge of South Anchorage, and Anchorage Media Group/KWHL 106.5 FM.

For skiers and riders, the resort will be operating the tram and chairlifts from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. throughout the weekend. Last day for daily operations is scheduled for Sunday, April 29 conditions permitting. This winter, the resort invites guests for one last weekend of winter fun from April 27 to 29 with reggae music at the Sitzmark and an end of season luau.

May skiing will begin on Saturday, May 5 and operate Fridays to Sundays through Memorial Day weekend with a bonus ski day on Monday, May 28. May chairlift hours will be 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. conditions permitting. Skiers and riders will be able to access terrain from the aerial tram and Chair 6. Guests can also après ski at the Sitzmark on days with May skiing. For more information about skiing in May and to find special off-season packages, please visit AlyeskaResort.com.
