Governor Releases Statement on Extension of Operations at LNG Facility
April 20, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell expressed his support for an announcement made today by ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil to extend operations at the Kenai Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant through early August in order to supply four additional LNG cargos to Asia. On February 10 the companies announced that the plant would cease its export operations as early as April.
“Today’s announcement is welcome news for the plant workers, the Kenai community and for Alaska’s economy,” Governor Parnell said. “In the free market system, private companies will continue to make decisions based on supply and demand, and in this case, we received some good news. This plant has been part of the foundation of the Kenai community for 42 years and the economic impact has been significant.”
ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil announced that this extension of export operations does not affect its earlier decision to eventually mothball the plant.
