Governor Orders Flags Lowered for Former SenatorApril 5, 2011, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday in honor and memory of former Senator Richard "Dick" Eliason of Sitka. Eliason died Sunday evening. He was 85.
Eliason served in the Alaska Legislature for more than 20 years, first for House District 3 from 1969 to 1970 and 1973 to 1980, and subsequently for Senate District B from 1981 to 1992. He was elected Alaska Senate president during the 17th State Legislature. Eliason also served as mayor of Sitka.
"Senator Eliason will be remembered for his decades of service to our state and his steadfast commitment to sensible, long-term management of Alaska's fisheries," Governor Parnell said. "Sandy and I will keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers."
Governor Parnell has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, April 6. Flags will be raised to full-staff the following morning.
