Begich Statement on Passing of Former Legislator Dick Eliason
U.S. Sen. Mark Begich today issued the following statement on the death of former Alaska State Legislator Dick Eliason:
“In his 22 years in the state House and Senate, Dick Eliason championed the interests of small boat fishermen and Alaska fishing communities. He fought for sustained yield management of our fisheries and the state hatchery system, and fought against finfish farming and illegal high seas fishing.
“Dick was the right man at the right time who saw problems and solutions rather than politics and party. I was fortunate to have witnessed his work firsthand during my time as a young staffer in the legislature.
“For his decades of service as a legislator and Sitka mayor, Dick was honored by fishermen and placed in the Alaska Seafood Industry and Wild Salmon Halls of Fame. In many respects, Dick Eliason’s greatest legacy is the high-quality Alaska salmon we all enjoy today.
