AK State House Majority Caucus press release: House Recognizes AHFC as State Authorizing Agency for Home Energy Rating
HB 197 will enable AHFC to become federally-recognized
Thursday, April 7, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – The Alaska State House of Representatives today unanimously passed a bill to recognize the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, or AHFC, as the state’s authority for home energy system ratings.
House Bill 197, sponsored by House Special Committee on Energy Co-Chair Lance Pruitt, R-Anchorage, will allow AHFC to gain federal recognition and finish developing their Home Energy Rating System, or HERS, and not lose out to a non-governmental third party. “If the AHFC is established as the authorizing agency, it will ensure that Alaska’s varied and extreme weather conditions are appropriately addressed prior to any HERS approval or implementation,” Pruitt said. “AHFC has already spent substantial amounts developing their own proprietary energy rating systems and software, and thousands of Alaskans have already benefited from the program.”
AHFC has operated its own AkWarm home energy rating system and software since 1996 and passage of HB 197 would ensure the agency’s version would be the state’s industry standard. The software is available to users at no cost.
HB 197 now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
