Red Cross Golden Heart AwardThe American Red Cross of Alaska is pleased to nominate Grainger Foundation for the 2010 AAVA/BP Golden Heart Award in the Outstanding Business category. Grainger has long been a partner with the Red Cross, however last year; they truly ramped up their participation and became a leading partner in our mutual goal of building stronger, safer communities. Last February, when South Central Alaska received ongoing volcanic ash alerts due to the intermittent eruptions of Mt. Redoubt, Grainger immediately stepped in to help, offering 1,600 dust masts, which protects breathing passages against the harm caused by volcanic ash. Many of these masks were distributed to low-income residents, and in particular those living in homeless shelters. In addition, Grainger made a $10,000 cash donation to assist the Red Cross in their statewide disaster preparedness efforts.
In June of 2009, Grainger provided an additional $10,000 to assist with the major flooding taking place along the Yukon and Kuskokwim region. With their help, the Red Cross was able to provide critical assistance to 17 affected villages, including 7,000 meals, 195 comfort kits, clean-up supplies including bleach, mops, buckets, and 150 “mental health contacts.”In November of 2009, Grainger stepped up again, providing an addition $20,000 for the Alaska Ready Program, a Red Cross program that trains volunteers statewide to respond to disasters in their communities. In total, Grainger donated more than $40,000 in 2009 alone to assist the Red Cross in their disaster preparedness and response efforts. In addition to their financial contributions, the Grainger team is committed to giving back to their community through volunteering. In December of 2009, several of the Grainger team, including individuals on the executive leadership team, attended a Red Cross volunteer orientation to learn how they could become more involved in providing Red Cross services throughout the community. Grainger is an exemplary community leader, committed to building a stronger, safer Alaska for all. We are honored to have such a strong, holistic partnership with the Grainger team in serving our communities.
