Legislature Designates May as Motorcycle & Motor Scooter Awareness Month
HB 262 sent to Governor for signature
Wednesday, April 7, 2010, Juneau, Alaska – The Alaska State Senate today unanimously passed House Bill 262, legislation designating May as Motorcycle and Motor Scooter Awareness Month in Alaska. Representative Wes Keller, R-Wasilla, sponsored the bill.
The bill is also intended to provide members of the Alaska Motorcycle Safety Commission enough time to prepare for an official public safety awareness campaign. “This is one of those bills that you get to remember every year when you see a motorcycle awareness ad, public service announcement, or a special event promoting motorcycle safety, “ Keller said. “I have enjoyed working on the bill this year with the guys and gals who ride motorcycles and are concerned with safety. This will allow them to continue their efforts in an organized manner.”
The governor in the past has highlighted motorcycle safety in Alaska by issuing a declaration making May the time for safety campaigns. Keller’s HB 262 changes that by permanently making May the official month of Motorcycle and Motor Scooter Awareness. “What drivers of larger vehicles need to remember is that two- and three-wheeled motorized vehicles are an important, delightful part of Americans’ transportation options,” Keller said. The bill now heads to the governor for signature.
