Governor Hails Passage of Veterans Loan Legislation

April 15, 2010, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today welcomed the passage of SB 217, legislation that will allow voters in the 2010 general election to approve $800 million of state-guaranteed bonds for the purchase of mortgage loans made to qualifying military veterans. The bonds would be issued by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation.

Governor Parnell has encouraged members of the armed services stationed in the state to consider permanent residency after their discharge.

“I’ve seen noble characteristics displayed again and again by Alaska’s military personnel,” Governor Parnell said. “We welcome veterans to call Alaska home after their service.”

About 75,000 veterans live in Alaska.

The loan program is designed to provide the lowest possible interest rates without imposing income criteria for eligibility. When veterans bonds were last placed on the general election ballot, in 2002, voters approved them by more than 70 percent.
