BBB Shredding Event Helped The Environment

Secure Your ID Day Helped Prevent Identity Theft and Environmental Impact

Anchorage, Alaska – April 22, 2010 – In anticipation of Earth Day, Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington helped consumers and businesses shred and recycle almost 20,000 pounds (10 tons) of financial records, business forms and other sensitive documents. On Saturday, April 17, 563 vehicles visited BBB's Secure Your ID Day events located in Seattle, Wash., Eugene, Ore. and Anchorage, Alaska.

To put into perspective the positive impact local consumers and small businesses had on the environment, according to cleanair.org the amount of paper shredded and recycled saved the following:

§ 240 trees

§ 30 cubic yards of landfill space

§ 70,000 gallons of water

§ 420,000 kilowatt hours (enough to heat your home for 5 years)

§ 3,900 gallons of oil

§ And prevented 600 pounds of air pollutants

"BBB's Secure Your ID Day helps many prevent identity theft, but actually benefits everyone by decreasing environmental impact," said Robert W.G. Andrew, CEO of BBB serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington.

BBB partnered with Bill Pierre Ford, George M. Sutton RV, Lyberger's Car & Truck Sales, Seadrunar Recycling, Shred-It and Shred Alaska to provide free shredding and recycling services. Participants took home bags with identity theft protection tips. For more information about upcoming Secure Your ID Days, visit akorww.bbb.org/secure-your-id.
