Alyeska Resort Extends Winter Season into May, Offering Skiing and Riding on Chair 6 Friday to Sunday in May and Memorial Day

April 19, 2010 (Girdwood, Alaska) – The snow came late this season, and paired with the warmer temperatures and longer days of spring, makes for ideal skiing and riding conditions. The base at the top of the ski area is over 200”, and total snowfall this winter is 821”. Alyeska Resort is announcing that it will extend its winter season and operate the Aerial Tram and Chair 6 for ski and snowboard enthusiasts on Friday to Sunday in the month of May. Operations will be weather dependant and the resort encourages guests to check the SKI-SNOW Hotline (907-754-7669) each morning before heading to the slopes.

Many season pass holders consider spring their favorite time of the season. “Spring skiing means sunshine, corn snow, goggle tans and beers on the Sitzmark deck. It’s payback for a long dark winter,” said Shannon Dierks, Girdwood local and season pass holder.

Lift tickets for May skiing are discounted: Adults ($40), Students/Seniors 60-69/Military/College ($35), Child 8-13 ($30), and Child 7 & Under/Senior 70+ ($15). Guests are encouraged to park in the overfill parking lot at The Hotel Alyeska for the most convenient access to the Alyeska Aerial Tram. The Tram will operate from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Skiing and riding will take place on Chair 6, accessing the highest elevations on the mountain for the best conditions.

From the hotel, ski guests can rent demo and regular ski and snowboard equipment rentals at the hotel rental shop. The MountainLearningCenter will be offering private lessons for intermediate level and above for $60 per hour. The Alyeska Mountain Shop is holding its end of season blowout sale with savings of up to 50% off on select winter outerwear, apparel and accessories. The resort will also be offering deck seating on the Columbia Patio on the second floor of the Hotel for après ski activities.

The Sitzmark has also extended its season into May and will be open Friday to Sunday, with live music featured on Friday and Saturday nights. The Sitzmark will be open Fridays from 5:00 PM to close; Saturdays from 2:00 PM to close and on Sundays from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM. For the opening weekend in May, the Sitzmark will be the center of activity for the Alaska Motor Mushers Club’s annual event April 30 to May 2, 2010.

The package includes one-night deluxe accommodations plus lift tickets and breakfast for two adults and up to three kids 18 and under.
