Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program hosts Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District students at Middle School Academy

Twelve-day academy inspires young Alaska students to pursue STEM careers, offers hands-on experience in STEM fields

 ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – The Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) is hosting 48 students from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District (MSBSD) for its March Middle School Academy. On March 17, students arrived at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) campus for 12 days of hands-on STEM learning activities. This is the third Middle School Academy specifically for MSBSD students.

Middle School Academies are residential science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) experiences designed to immerse students in applied learning opportunities in these career areas. Throughout the two-week, all-expenses-paid program, students will live like a college student at UAA while participating in team-based activities, ranging from computer and bridge builds to earthquake engineering and biological science sessions.

On Friday, March 20, students will participate in a new interactive energy activity, led by industry professionals and ANSEP staff. Throughout the day, students will test insulation and light bulbs for energy efficiency, and learn how to create alternative energy by building and testing wind turbines.

“We’re always looking for fun and innovative ways to get young Alaska students excited about STEM learning, with the goal of continually exposing them to opportunities that exist in these career areas,” said ANSEP Founder and Vice Provost Dr. Herb Ilisaurri Schroeder. “Reaching students at a young age puts them on track for STEM degrees and ahead of their peers, making it a crucial step in their academic success.”

ANSEP’s longitudinal model begins at the middle school level and continues through high school and into college undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs. ANSEP students at every level are successful at rates far exceeding national numbers. More than 74 percent of all ANSEP students who began bachelor’s degrees in STEM since 2010 are still in school or have graduated.

The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP), founded by Herb Schroeder, Ph.D., is part of the University of Alaska system and strives to effect systemic change in the hiring patterns of Alaska Natives in science and engineering by placing students on a career path to leadership. ANSEP’s model is developed to support students starting in sixth grade through high school and into science and engineering undergraduate degree programs and even through graduate school to the doctorate level. The focus of each ANSEP component is to provide excitement and empowerment around these career options.
